George Thomas DOWDESWELL

George Thomas DOWDESWELL was born at Crumlin (Mynyddyslwyn) in Newport, Monmouthshire in August 1863 to George and Margaret DOWDESWELL. They had come from Gloucestershire in England and Maesteg in Glamorgan, respectively. Margaret's maiden name was THOMAS.

George Thomas was one of eight children. So far little is known of his childhood but at the age of 17 he was living with his uncle Jenkin THOMAS and family at Penclawdd in Swansea, Glamorgan. He was employed as a tinplate washman. In 1887 at the age of 23 he married Mary BAYTON.


Mary Ann BAYTON was born at Ty Du, Rogerstone, Newport, Monmouthshire in February 1865 to Edward and Elizabeth BAYTON. Edward was a charcoal refiner at this time. His wife's maiden name had been THOMAS.

Mary was the oldest of five children and lived at Ty Du until she married. At the age of 16 she was a tin plate worker. In March 1887 she married George at the Register Office in Newport.


In July 1889 they had their first child Beatrice. At the time they were living at 20 Mount Pleasant, Blaina, Monmouthshire and George was working as a tinman. Later they had seven more children. By 1901 they had moved to 5 River Row, Blaina and George had become an insurance agent.

In November 1915 George died of acute bronchitis at the age of 52 when he and Mary were living at 16 Gladstone Street, Blaina.
In September 1943 Mary, who was by now a widow living at Gladstone Street, Blaina with her son Oswald and his family, died at the age of 78.
